PSOAS Affects Your Spine

HOW THE PSOAS AFFECTS YOUR SPINE

There is no other muscle that has been more misunderstood than PSOAS.

It is one of the most imp muscle which influences the spinal activity ( yes ROTATION as well).

  • Shortening of Rt. Psoas create a downward pull which leads to the concave bending of the lumbar spine. & results in the lateral bend of the torso towards shortened muscle.
  • Since lumbar rotation is limited, this rotational force is transmitted to the thoracic spine and ribcage. Resulting in the lumbar, ribcage, and sternum turning away from the shortened muscle.
  • & then the patient tries to compensate for this biomechanical fault by overusing other muscles to achieve a straight posture.
  • & Overtime this compensation leads to abnormal movement and muscle tension leading to restrictions and pain.
  • Some therapists often prescribe extension exercises to almost every back pain patient when in reality sometimes you can get rid of stiffness/ pain by balancing out the rectus-psoas complex and by opening up the frontal muscle group of the spine.
  • If your hip flexors are the reason for LBA, you need to find out why psoas is stiffening, and then only you will be able to have a PAIN- FREE- BACK !!!!
