Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common symptom that causes pain, numbness and tingling in the hands and arms. This condition occurs when the median nerve, one of the main nerves in the hand, passes through the wrist, and is compressed. Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the tunnel narrows or when the tissues around the placental tendons swell, putting pressure on the median nerve. These tissues are called joints. Normally, synovial fat lubricates the tendons, making it easier for the fingers to move.
